WHAT IS IELTS

If you are looking to work, live or study in an English-speaking country, then having a strong hold on the language is crucial. English is the third most spoken language in the world, with 379 million speakers worldwide. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the most popular test for candidates who are willing to pursue overseas education or looking forward to migrating to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK. The IELTS test is globally recognised by more than 11,000 employers, universities, schools, and immigration bodies, including 3,400 institutions in the USA.

The test has been designed to help native candidates who are willing to pursue overseas study or migrate to a country where English is the native language. The test will examine your ability to listen, read, write and speak in English. IELTS is graded on a scale of 1-9. IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge English.

There are innumerable benefits associated with learning the native language of the country where one aspires to work or study. Also, it is an essential skill for scoring job opportunities.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR IELTS

Preparing for IELTS can be a little confusing if one is unfamiliar with the test format. It is vital to understand and practise regularly before appearing for the test. The first step is to understand the test format before practising. They need to be comfortable with the test format by understanding the test’s content, the question and the task types for each section.

Secondly, students must clearly understand the test pattern so they can complete the test within the allocated time frame. It is recommended to conduct preparation under limited time so that they become better prepared to face the real challenge.

Thirdly, along with the IELTS preparation, developing fluency in English is also important. It is always better to start preparing for the test at least 3 – 6 months prior.

Developing skills in listening and reading in English is important as IELTS combines all the factors for proper assessment. Practising multitasking will be highly beneficial for candidates who want to ace the test.

CAEL

CAEL or Canadian Academic English Language is a test designed to measure the English language proficiency of students planning to study in Canada, especially in post-secondary institutions. CAEL provides an authentic representation of language use in a Canadian academic context. Candidates read articles, listen to a lecture, answer questions, and write a short essay, as expected in a first-year Canadian university or college classroom.

HOW TO PREPARE CAEL

CAEL is a test of academic English. It assesses your ability to use English in an academic context. Hence, the first step of CAEL preparation will be to immerse yourself in as much academic English content as possible. It is recommended to study news and journal articles, listen to podcasts and audiobooks on the academic subject material, to practise writing journals and emails to proficient English speakers.

Use a wide range of vocabulary and grammatical structures. Try to show the range of your vocabulary in your writing and speaking. It is advised to keep track of new academic terms and start using index cards, a notebook, or a chart on your computer.

Practise time management skills. Many candidates find it challenging to keep track of the time while writing a test. It is better to stay prepared in advance so that once the exam begins, you are completely aware of your capabilities and can finish the test within the limited time frame.

It is advised not to worry or focus on the accents as it can limit your communication. Concentrate on using correct grammar with accurate and varied vocabulary.

Practise reading in English, and use a variety of reading strategies. You don’t have to read every single word in a passage to successfully answer questions in the reading sections; instead, use reading strategies, such as skimming and scanning.
